Bird Flu Danger Growing in 2025
Scientists say the risk of another pandemic is rising after examining mutations in H5N1 viruses.
TODAY’S STORY
Egg prices could break more records in 2025.
In December and January, roughly 33 million more birds were affected by bird flu. The USDA predicts the impact of these losses in the marketplace will cause egg prices, which were $4.15 in December for a dozen Grade A large eggs, to increase another 20% this year.
On the other hand, seasonal factors continue to drive up demand. People bake with eggs during the holidays, especially Easter and Thanksgiving. Eggs are also a key ingredient in mayonnaise and salad dressings during the summer.
While a slight increase in egg prices may not strain most budgets, the potential for bird flu to spread to humans carries far more serious implications – both from a human life and economic standpoint. At least 68 people in North America have become ill from H5N1, and 1 person has died. While the probability of a full-on pandemic remains low, health officials are becoming increasingly worried since the virus mutated within the patient after infection — meaning it had begun to adapt to infect humans better.
