Barnes & Noble is “experiencing strong sales”
Amazon almost put them out of business; now they are copying the indie bookstore model to claw their way back to the top.
TODAY’S STORY
Barnes & Noble is on track to open 60 new locations this year.
Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt states that the bookseller is “experiencing strong sales” after ditching its one-size-fits-all large retail outlets. New stores copy the indie bookstore model, featuring the company’s latest design (e.g., brighter paint, lighter wood, new layout, etc.), books, toys, games, gifts, and B&N cafes.
The retailer also stopped accepting publishers’ payments for special displays. This practice was quick and easy money for the bookseller, but it hurt the company long-term, as unpopular books would sit in prime real estate for weeks on end within stores.
The bookseller, now selling 190MM physical books annually, has come a long way since they were on the verge of bankruptcy six years ago.
